Stephanie Deumer (b.1989, Oakville, Ontario, Canada) is a visual artist currently living and working in Los Angeles. Connecting seemingly dissimilar content into a web of insight, her installations uncover the ways subjects are constituted through and by language, media, and technology. More particularly, she explores how scientific studies and technological developments are entwined with social reproduction and the oppression of women. Complexities of female identity-formation figure prominently in her practice, expressing a mise en abyme of women’s objectification in infinite replications. Deumer completed a BA at the University of Guelph in 2011 and an MFA at California Institute of the Arts in 2015. From 2018-2019 she was a fellow at the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York. She is the recipient of a 2023 Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant, a 2023 New Work Grant from Prospect Art, and a 2019 Research and Creation Grant from Canada Arts Council, among others. In 2023, Deumer's large scale installation Under the Same Sun was nominated for Arch Daily's Building of The Year Award.
